This ongoing group of images is a response to my summer visits to a few of Maine’s beaches. What I tried to capture was less of what I saw, what the people and places looked like, and more of what it feels like. I think the ultimate compliment for the pictures would be “Ah, yes, of course.”
The components of the images – the northern summer light, sand or cliff, water, people unconcerned with anything but the pleasures of the moment and the ballet of motion against a simple stage, lend themselves to these small tableaus. While they may appear to be arranged, they are not.
There is no overriding, deep conceptual framework in operation. Everyone was having a good time, including me.
